Hee hee Dear Elle,                                                                                                     31st Oct 2002

I am a second year student at Cambridge university but I’m still having a lot of difficulty conversing with my peers. They all talk about important contemporary issues and I just never seem able to come up with any intelligent comments. Do you think you’d be able to help me? It would really help me fit in if you could get me up to date on what’s going on in the world. Could you tell me about the problems in the Middle East? Everyone’s talking about it, but I just don’t understand who’s right and why everyone keeps killing each other.

Yours,  Malcolm X

Dear Malcolm,

Maybe you should try reading one of those funny new papers that grown-ups like to read. I think they look very boring, and nowhere near as good as Cinderella, which is one of my favourite stories. My daddy reads a new paper called The Tims. I think it is about lots of different people called Tim, and maybe some of them live in the Middle East. One of my favourite people called Tim is Tiny Tim in the Muppets Christmas Carol. He is a frog and he sings a song that goes, “Tis the season to be jolly and joyous, Fa la la!” I like singing along when he goes “Fa la la!” I get a bit scared though when Charles Dickens and Rizzo the rat go to the future. I don’t like that bit. There is a horrid man in a black cloak.

I do not know much about the Middle East but my Nanna lives in East Anglia and she is very nice. She has a nice cat called Trixie who I like to chase around the garden. Maybe you should go and visit my Nanna and then you can talk to your friends about East Anglia.

Love Elle xxx
