Silly old students Dear Elle,                                                                                                     21st Nov 2002

I am a new student at Bristol University and although it is some way into the term now I am still having trouble fitting in. I have found that my main problem is that everyone I talk to seems to be up on current music and all the cool bands and so on, whilst I tend to listen to Status Quo or on occasion Huey Lewis and The News. I know that making friends isn’t all about having to appear cool but I thought if you could advise me on what’s cool and what’s not in music, like what bands I should listen to, this could help break the ice when I meet people.

Yours hopefully,

Michael Blake

Dear Michael,

I like music a lot. I have a special tape that I always listen to when I am in the car with my mummy. My favourite song on that tape is I am the Music Man, I come from far away. The Music Man is very clever, like me. He can play the piano, and the banjo, and the drums, and the trombone. When I am the Music Man, I come from far away has finished I ask my mummy to play it again. Sometimes we listen to it ten times in one journey! Sometimes, my mummy tries to put on a different song instead of I am the Music Man, I come from far away, but I am very clever and I always notice, and I make her put I am the Music Man, I come from far away on again.

My daddy likes music by Status Quo. Sometimes I hear him singing along to Rocking all over the world, but he is not very good at singing and it sounds funny. Sometimes my mummy reads me that nice story by Huey Lewis about Mr Tumnus and Narnia. I like that story. When I am older I am going to go to Narnia and meet Mr Tumnus. Thank you for writing to me.

Love Elle xxx
